Battle Chess III war ein geplantes, aber gecanceltes Videospiel aus der Battle Chess-Reihe von Interplay Entertainment.
Nach Battle Chess I (1988) und Battle Chess 4000 (1992) begann Interplay-Gründer Brian Fargo in den späten 90ern mit der Arbeit an einem zweiten Sequel. Am 28. Dezember 2015 enthüllte Fargo auf Twitter, dass das Projekt existierte und wieder eingestellt wurde:
„In the late 90's I started to spec a Battle Chess 3 with camera movement & voice acting“
Geplant waren u.a. bewegte Kameras und Sprachausgabe für die Figuren. Das veröffentlichte Proof-of-Concept-Material zeigt, dass das Spiel das Konzeptstadium nicht weit verlassen hat. Ein Release erfolgte nie.
Das eigentliche Schach bleibt normales Schach, aber mit Battle-Animationen - wie bei Teil 1 und 2:
„Battle Chess follows the same rules as traditional chess, with pieces moving in an animated fashion and battles playing out so that the capturing piece defeats its target.“
